Probation Service Officer

In the first twelve months of their employment with the Trust, a Probation Service Officer will work towards attaining a Vocational Qualification, Level 3 Diploma in Probation Practice.

A Probation Service Officer works in a variety of roles with offenders who pose a low – medium risk of harm:-

Offender Management:

Working in Offender Management a Probation Service Officer will:

  • Work with offenders made subject to a Court Order or Licence on their offending behaviour and reduce the risk of them committing further crime and harming others
  • Work with partnership agencies in assisting the offender to reduce their risk of committing further crime
  • Enforce the Court Order or Licence when the offender has failed to comply

Courts:

Working in Courts a, Probation Service Officer will:

  • Provide verbal and written reports to the Court to give them information about the offenders behaviour to inform and assist with sentencing
  • Record relevant information from Court
  • Prosecute breaches when an offender has not complied with their Order or Youth Offending Licence

Accredited Programmes:

A number of Probation Service Officers have completed specific training to deliver Accredited Offending Behaviour Programmes targeted to address a variety of offences.

Community Payback:

Working in Community Payback, Probation Service Officers will monitor and supervise offenders while completing their Unpaid Work or Community Payback hours as part of their Court Order.

Prisons:

Some Probation Service Officers are based in Prisons. They will assist offenders to complete specific work whilst they are in prison which may reduce the likelihood that they will offend again when they are released into the community.

Prolific and Priority Offenders/High Crime Causers:

Some Probation Service Officers will work solely with offenders who are known to be involved in very frequent offending. They will work closely with the police and other partnership agencies to give these offenders a more intensive level of intervention to reduce their rate of re-offending.

Community Supervision Service:

Probation Service Officers work alongside Volunteers to deliver a second stage of supervision to offenders who are identified as suitable to move into the ‘Community Supervision Service’. This enables offenders to work with specific Partnership Agencies who have been identified as contributing towards maintaining or improving the offender’s progress and reducing the risk of them committing further crime.

Secondment:

Some Probation Service Officers will be seconded to do a type of work for a designated period of time. For example, a Probation Service Officer may work for a partnership service or agency, such as the Youth Offending Service.
